Maurice F. Mendel, 92, Jasper

Maurice MendelMaurice F. Mendel, 92, of Jasper, died Monday (November 10) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Jasper January 19, 1922, to Frank and Agatha (Gardner) Mendel. He married Eileen Turner May 21, 1949, at St Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She died April 19, 2003.

Maurice worked as a financial comptroller for the Jasper Cabinet Company from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. He was a Navy veteran and served in both World War II and the Korea Conflict. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and the Jasper Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers, Notre Dame football, Indiana University sports, and the Jasper Wildcats. He enjoyed making leather crafts.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Lee Mendel, Waggaman, Louisiana; one son, Donald Mendel, Jasper; one sister, Martina Erny, Jasper; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Schum and Petronella Rothenberg; and two brothers; Sylvester and Jerome Mendel.

Services at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. V.F.W. Post No. 673 will conduct military gravesite rites. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Church or to a favorite charity.
