UPDATE: Gas Main Explosion In Holland

20141030_130300UPDATE: A subcontracting crew for Community Natural Gas was working on a gas line on Holland’s south east side when the line erupted into flames. It happened behind a home on Second Street just south of Main Street.

The cause is still under investigation however a spokesman for Community Gas at the scene said  a backhoe being used on the site cut the gas line.

The explosion, described as more of an eruption did catch a backhoe on fire after both crew members walked away from the scene to seek help.

One crew member was transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper. the injuries are not believed to be serious.

The nearby Hummingbird Day Care Ministry was evacuated for about an hour as were homes within a block of the explosion which happened shortly after 12 Noon.

Natural gas service in and around Holland will be interrupted for the next couple of hours
