After more than two years of planning and more than a year after getting approval from the City of Jasper’s Board of Zoning Appeals, construction will soon get underway for a new grocery store in Jasper.

Ruler Foods is a warehouse store grocery chain owned by Kroger which also owns JayC Food Stores.

Ruler bills itself as a no-frills grocery store where the customers bag their own groceries at the checkout counter.

The new Jasper store will following the Kroger/Ruler model of being about 20,000 square feet in size according to Jasper Lumber Company president Brett Stenftenagel. His company will be the general contractor for the new Jasper store construction.

Ruler Foods locations are strictly grocery stores, with no pharmacy and no fuel center. Customers bag their own groceries and ‘rent’ shopping carts for 25 cents, which is then returned when the cart is replaced. Kroger officials says this cuts down on the number of employees needed at each store.

The Jasper store will be built on land just to the west of the new Knights of Columbus hall on East 30th. Stenftenagel says construction could be completed by this February.
