Fire Destroys Hay Barn Near Duff This Morning

Spontaneous combustion is believed to be the cause of a hay barn fire near Duff early this morning.

The fire was reported at the Dennis Whitsitt Farm on South 650 West just north of town.

A metal-sided 40-by-60 pole barn with large round hay bales inside was fully engulfed when Huntingburg fire fighters arrived at about 1:30am.

Now there was a 20-by-60 “lean-to” attached building with farm implements in it.

Huntingburg fire chief Scott Patberg says the hay barn and the lean-to attached building were a total loss. He says HPD was able to save a nearby barn from being damaged by fire. That building is less than 20 feet away from the hay barn.
