A Jasper man now faces six felonies after he became combative with police outside his near northside home Thursday morning.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says 63-year old Leon Mehling of Jasper was observed by a department deputy committing a series of traffic infractions while he was operating a motor scooter.

DCSD says the deputy approached Mehling as he pulled into the driveway of his home at 15th and Jackson Streets at about 10 oclock Thursday morning.

A Jasper city police K-9 officer was called in for assistance.   DCSD says Mehling was suspected of operating the scooter while intoxicated.  After arriving on scene, the JPD K-9 indicated the presence of narcotics on the scooter.

DCSD says it was then Mehling became uncooperative and combative.   As Mehling continued to resist being handcuffed; he was tazed.

DCSD says during the struggle Mehling kicked a Jasper City Police officer causing minor scrapes to the officer’s hand.  A short time later, police found a baggie containing methamphetamine on Mehling.

Mehling was later transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for a blood draw which DCSD says he refused to adhere to.   The investigating officer sought and was granted a search warrant to draw blood samples, but Mehling again refused to cooperate after the search warrant was granted.

DCSD says he was eventually booked into the Dubois County Security Center on following charges (all Level 6 felonies); Operating While a Habitual Traffic Violator for Life, Operating While Intoxicated, Obstruction of Justice, Resisting Law Enforcement causing Injury to an Officer, Battery Causing Injury to an Officer, and Possession of Methamphetamine.
