Allen J. Werne, 85, Ferdinand

Allen WerneAllen J. Werne, 85, of Ferdinand, died, Monday (August 25) at his home. He was born in Ferdinand February 12, 1929, to Ray J. and Dorothy (Dotterweich) Werne. He married Doris Harpenau March 26, 1951, at St. Marks Church near Tell City.

Allen was a self-employed farmer. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He served 18 years as president of Ferdinand Farmers Insurance Company and was one of the original six members of the Dubois County Airport Authority. He received numerous awards, including the 2006 Dubois County Cattleman Outstanding Cattleman Award; 1965 Outstanding Grassland Farmer, and the 2006 Indiana Beef Cattle Association Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post No. 124, St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, and the church’s St. Joseph Sodality.

He is survived by his wife, Doris A. Werne; one son, Dan “Red” Werne, Ferdinand; four daughters, Judy Olinger and husband Gene, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Mickie Paulin and husband Greg, Ferdinand, Brenda Lueken and husband Ronnie, Schnellville, and Bev Atkins and husband Gordon, St. Anthony; two sisters, Elaine Bettag and husband John, Mariah Hill and Dolores Boeglin, Ferdinand; two brothers, Bill Werne, Surprise, Arizona, and Donald Werne and wife Rita, Ft. Lauderdale Florida.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by one son, Jerry L. Werne. one sister, Phyllis Sermersheim, and two grandchildren, Nathan and Deven Lueken.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and 7-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Services at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Ferdinand American Legion Post No.124 will conduct military graveside services.
