LaVerne A. Meyer, 84, Huntingburg

LaVerne MeyerLaVerne A. Meyer, 84, of Huntingburg, died Thursday (August 21) at The Waters of Huntingburg nursing center in Huntingburg. She was born September 16, 1929, in Jasper to Albert and Catherine (Frohlich) Schmitt. She married James E. Meyer July 18, 1953, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland.

Mrs. Meyer was a full time registered nurse at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper for 42 years. After retiring from the hospital, she continued to provide nursing care to homebound patients for an additional 18 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg, St. Mary’s Ladies Sodality, the Huntingburg V.F.W. Post No. 2366 Auxiliary, and the Ferdinand American Legion Post No. 124 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, James E. Meyer; seven sons, Ed Meyer and wife Donna, Pat Meyer and wife Barb, Bob Meyer and wife Eileen, all of Huntingburg, Art and Paul Meyer, both of Brownsburg, Joe Meyer and wife Lori, Shawnee, Kansas, and Randy Meyer and wife, Mary, Spring Hill Kansas; three daughters, Mary Jo Fischer and husband Jake, and Cathy Tretter and husband Rich, all of Huntingburg, and Nancy Rahman, Chesterfield, Missouri; three brothers, Frank Schmitt, Huntingburg, and Ray and Vincent Schmitt, Jasper; one sister, Gloria Jean Ruhe, Brazil; 23 grandchilden; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, David Schmitt; and two sisters, Josephine Jacob and Mary Bresser.

Services at 10 a.m. (EDT) Monday at St. Mary’s Church in Huntingburg with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg.  St. Mary’s Parish and Ladies Sodality will pray a rosary at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and a combined V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliary memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church Organ Restoration Fund. Condolences may be shared online at www.nassandson.com.
