Mary Moy JohnsonMary Moy Johnson, 91 of Jasper, died Thursday (August 7) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born August 2, 1923, in Augusta, Georgia, to Leong and Dessie Woo. She had two marriages. Her first marriage was to Vincent Wong Moy. He died in 1969. Her second marriage was to Buell Johnson. He died in 2003.

Mary was the second of eight children and a child of immigrants from Southern China who were grocery store owners in Augusta, Georgia. She was owner of a number of Chinese restaurants with her first husband. Following his death, she moved from Madison, Indiana to Jasper to assist her daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and John Semersheim, in their opening of the first Chinese restaurant in Dubois County, the Ming Tree in Huntingburg. After her retirement from the restaurant business, she worked for 10 years for Schneider’s Shoe Store in Jasper, earning top sales person for SAS Shoes.

She enjoyed sharing her Christian faith with others and inviting them to her home church, Central Christian Church of Huntingburg. She also enjoyed a very active social life dancing and living life to its fullest.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary VanHoy, Indianapolis, Miriam Sermersheim and husband John Michael, Bloomington, and Rebecca Falkenberg and husband Randy, Atlanta, Georgia; two sons, Paul Wong, Milwaukee, and Thomas Moy, Greenwood; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Esther Quan, Houston, and Daisy Brazzeal, Atlanta.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, James Moy.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at noon Monday at Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. Pastor Craig Taylor will officiate. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home.
