Elmer J. Meyer, 82, Celestine

Elmer MeyerElmer J. Meyer, 82, of Celestine, died Monday (July 21) at his home. He was born August 17, 1931 in Ferdinand to Frank and Frances (Eversman) Meyer. He married Doris Schnell June 27, 1953, in St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine.

Elmer was superintendent of Jasper Novelty Plant No. 3 for 27 years. He also worked at Jasper Seating and retired from Executive Furniture in 1993. He was a member of St. Celestine Church. He served in the Indiana National Guard for 9 years, served on the steering committee to form the Celestine Fire Department, and was a charter member of the Celestine Volunteer Fire Department, where he served on the board of directors and was a first responder. He was a charter member of the Celestine Community Club, and served as the club’s second. He served on the Celestine Quasqui-Centennial Committee, was an honorary member of the Celestine Jaycees, and was instrumental in bringing street lights to Celestine. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and was an avid fan of Indiana University basketball, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Indianapolis Colts, and the Indiana Pacers.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Meyer; two daughters, Mary Geralyn Nordhoff and husband Gary, Celestine, and Suzanne Krampe and husband Steve, Ferdinand; one son, Roger Meyer and wife Theresa, Celestine; daughter-in-law Deb Meyer-Benton and husband John, Celestine; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; and one brother, Frank “Jackson” Meyer, Ferdinand.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Randall Lee Meyer, two sisters, Theresa Meyer and Florentine Lasher, and one brother, Herbert Meyer.

Services at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Celestine Church with burial following in the church cemetery. St. Anthony American Legion Post No. 493 will conduct military gravesite rites. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, and one hour before services at the church Friday. The St. Celestine parish will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. The Indiana Volunteer Fire Fighters Association will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday.
