Robert L. Haas, 85, Velpen

Robert L. HaasRobert L. Haas, 85, of Velpen, died Sunday (July 6) at The Waters of Huntingburg Nursing Center in Huntingburg. He was born March 31, 1929, in Huntingburg, to Henry A. and Rosena (Mehling) Haas. He married Virginia “Jennie” Nell Givens March 9, 1968, in Shawneetown, Illinois. She died June 28, 2012.

Robert was a retired furniture factory worker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg. He served as a Private First Class in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He originally enlisted with the 181st Airborne before being transferred to the 68th AAA Gun Battalion. It was during his deployment in Korea that he received a service connected disability.

He is survived by one daughter, Theresa Hathaway, Princeton; three sons, David Haas and wife Debbie, Huntingburg, Jerry Haas, Lynnville, and Robert W. Brown, Evansville; two sisters, Lucille Kellams, Jasper, and Shirley Haas, Velpen; five grandchildren,
Misty Cederholm and Chris Hathaway, both of Princeton, Amanda “Mandy” Haas, Indianapolis, Cody Haas, Kyana, and Stacee Campbell, Lutz, Florida; and five great-grandchildren, Bailee, J.W., Liberty and Ethaniel Cederholm, and Klayton Campbell.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Haas.

Services at 10 a.m. (EDT) Saturday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial following in Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City. The funeral will be officiated by Fr. Ryan Hilderbrand, Deacon Thomas Holsworth will perform the committal rites at the cemetery. The VFW Post No. 2366 Memorial Detail will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A parish rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
