Florentine Mathias, 92, of Jasper, died Wednesday (April 30) at Brookside Village in Jasper. She was born in Dubois March 3, 1922, to Frank and Margaret (Schmitt) Seger. She married Othmar “Ottie” Mathias May 4, 1946, at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Dubois. He died February 1, 2013.
Florentine was a beautician in the Jasper area for over 65 years. She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church and it’s Ladies Sodality, the Jasper Circle of the Daughters of Isabella, the VFW Post No. 673 Auxiliary, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 77 Auxiliary, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great children.
She is survived by one daughter, Charlene Sermersheim and husband, Gary, Ireland; three sons, Dennis Mathias and wife Nancy, Pittsboro, North Carolina, Larry Mathias and wife Iomara, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Paul Mathias, Starkville, Mississippi; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Charles Seger and wife Geraldine, Jasper, Linus Seger and wife June, Astoria, Oregon, and James Seger and wife Susanne, Dubois.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Irene Persohn, and five brothers, Francis, Joseph, Alvin, Cletus, and Claude Seger.
Services at 10 a.m. Saturday at Precious Blood Church with entombment following in the Fairview Cemetery mausoleum. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Precious Blood Ladies Sodality will pray the rosary at 1:45 p.m. The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary will conduct a memorial service at 6 pm.
