Berdean G. Chappell, 87, of Huntingburg, died Saturday (March 15) at her home. She was born November 1, 1926, in Birdseye, to Alvin and Dora (Koch) Garland. She married Andrew “Jack” Chappell July 3, 1948, in Huntingburg.
Berdean worked at the General Electric plant in Huntingburg during World War 2, as a bookkeeper for Chappell’s Texaco and Chappell’s Electric, and as a clerk at Gossard’s and Winning Apparel. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Huntingburg Conservation Club, and the VFW Post No. 2366 Auxiliary.
She is survived by one daughter, Andrea Fleck and husband Larry, Indianapolis; two sons, Michael Chappell and wife Selene Phillips, Floyd Knobs, and Daniel Chappell and wife Anita, Greenwood; one sister, Rebecca Sprinkle, Greencastle; one brother, Carl Garland, Little Rock, Arkansas; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Andrew “Jack” Chappell, who died 1987; three brothers, Vernus “Copper” Garland, Frank Garland, and James Garland; and three sisters, Etta Belle Uebelhor, Jewell Eckert, and Rosalee Garland who died in infancy.
Funeral services at 10 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg . A parish rosary prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. and a VFW Auxiliary memorial service 6:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
