Alban Merkley, 91, of St. Anthony, died Sunday (March 16) at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. He was born April 8, 1922, in St. Anthony, to Frank and Theresia (Horney) Merkley. He married Rose Gutgsell July 5, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.
Alban was an Army Veteran and served in India during World War 2. He worked for Jasper Engine Exchange for 33 years, from which he retired in 1984. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony American Legion Post No. 493, Jasper VFW Post No. 673, The St. Anthony Senior Citizens, and the St. Anthony Community Center. He enjoyed gardening, making maple syrup, and working on automobiles and tractors.
Surviving are his wife, Rose Merkley; two daughters, Lois June Wagner and husband Daniel, Ferdinand, and Carol Ann Kreilein and husband Michael, St. Anthony; six sons,
Stephen L. Merkley and wife Darlene, St. Anthony, Randall A. Merkley and wife Sharon, Huntingburg, Robert F. Merkley and wife Donnettia, Jasper, Michael G. Merkley and wife Annette, Huntingburg, Kenny W. Merkley and wife Lisa, Dubois, and Leon K. Merkley and wife Karen, Jasper; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with burial following in the church cemetery. St. Anthony American Legion Post No.493 will conduct military gravesite rites. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, and one hour before services at the church.
