Guy Nelson Austin, Jr.Guy Nelson Austin, Jr., 87, of Birdseye, died Saturday (March 8) at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born September 11, 1926, in Dubois County to Guy N. Austin, Sr. and Lola (Cook) Austin. He married Anna Rose Schnell November 6, 1951, at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

Guy was a retired insurance agent for Western and Southern Insurance. He served in the United States Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1947 and the United States Army from 1951 to 1957. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Schnellville, Huntingburg VFW Post No. 2366, Jasper American Legion Post No. 147, and a former member of the Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by four daughters, Debra Johnson and husband Rick, New Harmony, Sandy Hall, Sanford, North Carolina, Belle Ann Hagedorn and husband Fred, and Laura Mohr, all of Ferdinand; three sons, Mark Austin and wife, Marcia, and Matthew Austin and wife Tracy, all of Birdseye, and Tom Austin and wife, Cheryl, Ramsey; one sister, Jeanie Gilliatt, Fishers; 15 grandchildren, Timothy Kahle and wife Laura, Lesha McCoy and husband Mitchell, Heather Kirk and husband Cy, Colin Austin and wife Ericka, Elliott Hagedorn and wife Mary, Isabel Makowski and husband Matt, Camille Hagedorn, Anna Hagedorn, Ashley (Armstrong and husband Jason, Cody Austin, Shelby Austin, Logan Mohr, Isaac Austin, Guy Austin and Brice Austin; and eight great-grandchildren, Grace, Gibson, and Ethan Kahle,  Amanda and Cameron McCoy, McKayla and Nathan Kirk, and Ava Calvert.

Funeral services  at 10 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Schnellville with burial following in Birdseye Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 2366 Memorial Detail. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg and from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A parish vigil prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and a Firefighter’s Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association District 18 and Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department, 9 W.
