Charles Richard “Nick” Nicholson, 91, Jasper

NickCharles Richard “Nick” Nicholson, 91 of Jasper, died Friday (March 7) at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburg. Dick Nicholson was also known as “Candy Man” for his cotton candy at venues around Dubois County. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, March 9, 1923, to Charles A. and Lydia (Pretz) Nicholson.

Nick was a Navy veteran, serving during WWII. He was also a professional photographer. He photographed many wedding and photos for newspaper articles. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, a charter member of the Dubois County Navy Club Ship No. 90, the Jasper Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post No. 147, and VFW Post No. 673.

Surviving are one sister, Ruth Ann Hinkle and husband Ralph, Flint, Michigan; caregiver Ken Schuetter, Jasper; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Schwinghamer and two brothers, Dr. Arnold Nicholson and Harold Nicholson.

Funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Precious Blood Catholic Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. VFW Post No. 673 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday by Dubois County Navy Club Ship No. 90 at the funeral home.
