Jasper Library Board Thursday night approved a late fee collection procedure that could result in the library taking those who owe long overdue fees to small claims court.
Thursday night’s approval comes after an successful amnesty program through the month of December. Library director Rita Douthitt earlier said the library would rather have the borrowed books and other materials returned than going after the overdue fees.
The library’s overdue fees at one time totaled more than 50-thousand dollars; some of the late fees date back as much as six years.
If you do have an overdue book or material, expect a letter in the mail from the library’s attorney asking you to return it. If not, a small claims case against you could follow.
