Betty Sturm, 91 of Jasper, died Thursday (February 20) at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. She was born on May 11, 1922, in Jasper, to Othmar and Laura (Eckstein) Eckerle. She married Omer Sturm November 18, 1944, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. He died February 26, 2002.
Betty was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Jasper Circle of the Daughters of Isabella, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a volunteer and member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.She was an avid sports fan, participating in golf and tennis for many years, and a co-founder of the Jasper Racquet Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Schneider and husband Larry, Columbus and Carol Steffe and husband Ron, Jasper; three sons, John Sturm and wife Polly, Chevy Chase, Maryland, Bill Sturm and wife Gail, Lake Forest, Illinois, and Glen Sturm and wife Shane, Jasper; 13 grandchildren, Patrick and Kathryn Sturm, Broc, Andrew, Patrick and Jonathan Schneider; Alex and Nick Sturm; Kerry Brames, Blair and Bart Sturm, and Scott and Sara Steffe; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lou Casper.
Funeral services at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with private entombment following in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.
