Ernest I. Stemle, 68, of Huntingburg, died Saturday (February 15) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born March 16, 1945, in Schnellville, to Maurice and Catherine (Miller) Stemle. He married Caroline S. “Susie” Blessinger June 26, 1965, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.
Ernest was a factory worker and supervisor, a 1963 graduate of Birdseye High School, a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Schnellville Conservation Club, the Sportsman’s Club, A.A.R.P., and N.R.A. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing cards, and participating in horseshoe tournaments.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline S. “Susie” Stemle; one daughter, Marcia R. Stemle, Huntingburg; six sisters, Rose Groemminger and husband Manfred, Clara Fischer and husband Leonard, and Rita Klem, all of St. Anthony; Hilda Hoing and husband, James, Huntingburg; and Dorothy Blessinger and Carol Stemle, both of Schnellville; and one grandson, Ryan A. Lehmkuhler, Huntingburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services at 10 a.m. (EST) Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. A parish rosary prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial donations may be made to the Dubois County Special Olympics or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
