Lueken’s Apparent Game-Winner Waived Off; Refs Made Right Call

The Lady Raiders of Southridge win their first ever 3A girls sectional title Saturday night defeating host Vincennes Lincoln 46-41.  Kayla Voegerl scores 21 to lead Southridge to its first sectional title since 2007 (2A) and the Lady Raiders’ ninth in school history.

Meanwhile, at Oakland City, Northeast Dubois’ streak of 11 1A sectional crowns has come to an end.  The Lady Jeeps lost an overtime heartbreaker to host Wood Memorial, 62-57.

The buzz after the game was what many Jeeps fans thought was the apparent game-winning three-pointer by Emily Lueken at the end of regulation.  The shot would have given Northeast Dubois its 12th consecutive sectional crown but it was waived off by the game referees.

NNDC cameraman David Birge caught Lueken’s shot on video and still frames of the shot show Emily did not get it off in time.

The red light on the opposite backboard indicating time has expired is on well before the shot leaves Lueken’s hand.   The four video stills below cover a span of 12 video frames which is the equivalent of  about .3 seconds.

Note: NNDC will have video highlights of both sectional championship games coming up this morning.
