Susan J. Mendel, 74, of Jasper, died Friday (February 7), at Northwood Retirement Community in. She was born August 21, 1939, in Jasper, Wilfred and Marcella (Werner) Beyke. She married Kenneth L. Mendel September 24, 1959, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He died September 19, 2010.
Susan worked for the Dubois County Extension Service for 35 years as a secretary and office manager. She was very active in the Dubois County 4-H program, was a recipient of the Diocese of Evansville Brute Award, and a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church where she served on the building and grounds committee and on the church’s bereavement program. She also enjoyed her ceramics.
Surviving are one daughter, Lynn Mendel, Jasper; one son, Eric Mendel, Jasper; two grandchildren, Jason and Phylicia Mendel; four great-grandchildren, Josh, Haven, Grace and Colton; one sister, LaVerne Weisman and husband Charles, Jasper; three brothers, Kenneth P. Beyke and wife Nancy, Jasper, Richard C. Beyke and wife Rose, Winslow, and Glenn W. Beyke, Kennesaw, Georgia.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn E. Kendall.
Funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Precious Blood Catholic Church with entombment in the Fairview Cemetery mausoleum. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to Precious Blood Catholic Church or to the American Heart Association.
