Jasper; Southridge Each Qualify 5 For Wrestling Semistate

IHSAAThe Jasper & Southridge wrestling teams qualified five wrestlers each for this coming Saturday’s IHSAA Wrestling Semistate.

Those who finish in the top 4 in their weight class qualify for the semistate.

Two of Jasper’s five semistate qualifiers wrestlers took first place at yesterday’s regional at Bloomington South High School.  Dillon Hurst took first place at 106 Pounds and Nathan Schitter, a state finalist a year ago, was tops in this year’s regional at 126.

Other semistate qualifiers for Jasper were Ruger Kersteins (2nd at 152), Cole Kreilein (3rd at 170)  and Moises Velanciano (4th at 285).

Southridge also qualified five wrestlers for the semistate.  They are Mitch Mundy who took 3rd place at 145 , Bryce Harter (2nd at 170), Andy Fischer (2nd at 182), Alex Merkel (3rd at 220) and Ethan Schwoeppe (2nd at 285).

Forest Park’s Cody Flamion was the only Ranger to qualify for the semistate.  He did so by finishing 3rd at 126.  He lost to Jasper’s Schitter in the semifinals of the regional.  Winston Glenn (132), a semistate qualifier for Forest Park a year ago, was beaten in his first-round match yesterday.

Bloomington South took the team regional title with a team score of 198.5.  Jasper was a distant second with 78 points.  Southridge was fifth with 66.   Forest Park scored 9 points good for 14th out of 19 schools at the regional.

This Saturday’s semistate will be held at the Ford Center in Evansville.
