Mobel_Inc.Ferdinand-based Mobel, Inc. will cease operations at the end of February.

Company CEO Paul Ruhe confirmed the closing in a news release Thursday.

In the release Ruhe said, “This is a strategic decision by Möbel. He goes on to say that despite the company’s attempts to overcome obstacles presented by today’s economy, management has determined that it cannot continue to operate profitably.”

The company currently has about 60 employees. Mobel began building fine-furniture 1971. It manufacturing facilites have grown over the years from being in several buildings covering 38,000-square-feet to its current 200,000-square-foot facility on Ferdinand’s west side.

The company at one point had as many as 150 employees.  Its official final day will be February 28th.

Mobel will continue to accept orders through February 17th, or until its inventory is depleted, at which point it will engage in operations to liquidate remaining inventory.

Town officials hope some of the Mobel employees can transition to nearby Masterbrand Cabinets.  Earlier Masterbrand announced it will be expanding its Ferdinand plant.  With the expansion comes 135 new jobs.
