Jasper police say they have received several reports of local residents who say they have been contacted by subjects alleging to be representatives of the Publishers’ Clearing House Sweepstakes. The scam tells people they have won large sums of money and/or prizes.
The perpetrators have contacted local residents by telephone and have asked for personal information. JPD says they then attempt to convince people to forward money and/or gift cards to cover “refundable deposits,” “prepayment of taxes,” “shipping and handling,” etc.
Jasper police are asking local residents to take notice that this is a scam and say do not give out personal information, send money or gift cards if you are contacted by telephone, email or text messages. Police say legitimate businesses will not ask you for these fees or gift cards.
If you have been been a victim of this scam, police say you should contact the Publishers’ Clearing House Fraud Department at 1-800-392-4190 or online at firstname.lastname@example.org.
