The Sheriff’s department says its appears Ahlfeld’s SUV rear-ended a car that was stopped on northbound 162. The driver of the car, 52-year old Robin Vaal of rural Ferdinand was attempting to make a turn onto East Holiday Lake Road.
Ahlfield’s SUV struck Vaal’s in the rear before it continued off the eastside of the highwayt, turning over onto the driver’s side and then turning back onto its wheels before coming to rest in a ditch.
DCSD says Ahlfield was not wearing a seatbelt and they suspect he was partially ejected from the vehicle through the broken driver’s side window.
Ahlfeld suffered severe head and facial injuries and was transported from the scene by Memorial Hospital EMS before being transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville for further treatment. Vaal was not hurt.
