Frieda C. Gehlhausen, 88, of Santa Claus, died Monday (December 23) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born in Jasper July 4, 1925, to Thomas and Emma (Hopf) Giesler. She married Jerome R. Gehlhausen November 26, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. Jerome died July 7, 2008.
Frieda was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 124 and St. Ferdinand Parish in Ferdinand. She had been employed in the kitchen at the former Marian Heights Academy and at General Electric in Huntingburg. She enjoyed playing cards and quilting.
Surviving are three sons, Ronald Gehlhausen and wife Mary, Bretzville, Steven Gehlhausen and wife Lynda, Ferdinand and Gregory Gehlhausen , Santa Claus; four daughters, Donna Belkoski, Ferdinand, Gayla Utley and husband Wayne and Kanda Wade and husband Randy, all of Santa Claus, and Shelly Haidari, Ferdinand; three sisters, Caroline St. Clair, Cincinnati, Ohio, Rosalie “Rosie” Fromme, Jasper, and Armella “Mell” Hale, Indianapolis; 20 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three infant children, Joseph, Mark and Mary Gehlhausen; four brothers, Martin, Louis and Victor Giesler and Elmer Thomas; six sisters, Hilda Kays, Margaret “Peggy” Schmitt, Katherine Kluemper-Lubbers, Bernadine Mehringer, Roberta Sternberg and infant Dorothy Mae Giesler.
Funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Friday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Condolences may be shared at www.becherfuneralhome.com.
