Sr. Bernice Kuper, SP, 91, St. Mary-of-the-Woods

Sr. Bernice KuperSister Bernice Kuper, 91, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died Tuesday (November 26) in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Jasper on August 22, 1922, to William and Theresa (Fritsch) Kuper and was named Anna Bernice.

She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on January 6, 1940, and received the name Sister Ann Bernice. She professed final vows August 15, 1948. She graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and the University of Notre Dame. She ministered in elementary and high schools for 21 years in Indiana, Illinois, and Oregon. She was director of novices, spent time in congregation administration and then was pastoral associate at St. John Parish in Newburgh for 13 years. She retired in 1994 and became part of the new membership team at the Motherhouse. She worked in formation ministry and spiritual direction and enjoyed spinning alpaca fiber and knitting scarves with the fiber.

Surviving are a sister, Dolores Habig of Jasper; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice Kuper.

Funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday in Church of the Immaculate Conception, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Father Daniel R. Hopcus will officiate. Burial will be in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Friends may call from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Friday at the church, followed by a wake service at 4:30. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home in Terre Haute assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Providence,  Saint Mary-of-the-Woods , Indiana,  47876.
