ClintBlack1smCountry music legend, Clint Black will perform at the Jasper Arts Center on Sunday, November 10th  at 7:30 p.m. Black is a prolific singer-songwriter who has long been heralded as one of Country music’s brightest stars.  This performance is on the New Directions series which is designed to appeal to all audiences but most particularly to 25 to 45 year old patrons.

Born in New Jersey and the youngest of four children, the Black family moved back to Texas when Clint was only a year old.  Raised in Katy, Texas, Black was demonstrating his musical talent by his early teens where he and his older brothers entertained at back yard barbeques with their band.  Black taught himself to play the harmonica as well as bass guitar and drums.

After he dropped out of high school at age 17, Black supported his music habit with a variety of jobs ranging from construction worker to fishing guide.  In 1987, he met Hayden Nicholas and they created a musical partnership which has lasted for decades.  Black has written over 100 songs, many of which are collaborations with Nicholas.  “To me, a song is more than just something to sing.  It’s something to learn from. It’s somebody else’s true feeling.  I’m always trying to get at the meaning.” His biggest musical influences are Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson.

Soon after meeting Nicholas, Black signed with RCA records and his first album Killin’ Time was released.  It was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart and was certified platinum in 1990.  Five singles from this album reached number one, the first time any country music artist had achieved this feat.  Black joined a streak of young, successful country artists such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and Mark Chestnutt who promoted traditional country sound with pop appeal.

Black has had a string of albums that are well-known to his fans:  Put Yourself in My Shoes (1990), The Hard Way (1992), No Time to Kill (1993), One Emotion (1994), Nothin’ But the Tail Lights (1997), D’lectrified (1999), Spend My Time (2004) and Drinkin’ and Other Songs (2005).  He has also created several compilation albums including his latest When I Said I Do which was released through Cracker Barrel restaurants this year.

Clint Black has won many country music awards including Top Male Vocalist and Album of the Year among others.  He has also joined a select group of country music artists who have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Many people have also viewed Black on The Apprentice as well as other movie and TV roles.  He still works with his Apprentice partner, Scott Hamilton, to raise money for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF), a developmental disorder.

Around the time that Black’s career began to take off, he met and later married Lisa Hartman. They have one child, Lily Pearl, born in 2001.
