New Testing Facility Opens in Jasper With Ribbon-Cutting November 7th

HOLLAND, Mich. (October 29, 2013) – Advanced Furniture Testing (AFT), one of the nation’s leading office furniture testing facilities, is opening a new facility in Jasper, IN to accommodate mechanical furniture testing machines in a 9,600 square-foot building.

Advanced Furniture Testing was founded in 2007 by Doug Woodard to fill a void in the furniture industry, which lacked a dedicated supplier of high quality test and machine building services. Office workers want assurance that chairs will support them daily, casters will roll smoothly, and drawers will push and pull to support heavy contents.

The principals of the company have more than 50 years of combined experience, serving first as employees and now as suppliers to Fortune 500 companies, making them uniquely qualified to interpret test standards and test results.  In 2012, the company moved to a larger facility to keep up with the increased demand for furniture testing services.

AFT Opens Testing Facility in Jasper, Indiana

“There are many reasons why we made the decision to open a testing facility in Jasper,” says Woodard.  “Our goal is to serve the furniture market in the best possible manner, and we have been true to our mission.  There are only a handful of regions rich in furniture manufacturing, and one is Jasper. Therefore, we made the decision to establish a presence in this area with our dedicated furniture testing facility.  The key is ‘dedicated’  — we don’t test everything – we are recognized for our furniture testing expertise.”

The ribbon cutting will be held in Jasper at the new facility at 2528 Cathy Lane on Thursday, November 7 at 3:00pm.  Following the ribbon cutting, guests will tour the facility and attend a reception.

Indiana is no stranger to furniture testing.  In 1977, the General Services Administration of the Federal Government invited PurdueUniversity’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources to develop performance tests for upholstered furniture, for the express use of its furniture procurement programs.  The resulting standard has been in use since 1980, with Dr. Carl A. Eckelman, Professor of Wood Science, instrumental in developing and sustaining this program.  Woodard has conducted research, based on the work of Dr. Eckelman.

“It is with extreme pride that the Jasper Chamber of Commerce assists Advance Furniture Testing with this ribbon-cutting ceremony. AFT is here because of the work they do with several local manufacturing companies.  This is economic development at its finest – when a company locates in our community due to its working relationship with other businesses.  We are proud they have chosen Jasper, Indiana for this facility and hope they grow as time goes on,” said Nancy Eckerle, executive director of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce.

Certifications and Accreditations Make AFT World Class Testing Company

AFT is an accredited lab and tests many standards, including BIFMA (The Business + Institutional Furniture Manufacturing Association), ASTM, UL, CGSB (Canadian) European, and custom standards.

“It’s important to have items tested,” says Woodard.  “An accredited lab is actually evaluated on their ability to perform testing properly and has to maintain a strict quality system around these activities.”

BIFMA sponsors the development and maintenance of the safety, performance and sustainability standards for furniture. AFT is the most active third party lab for BIFMA standard development. BIFMA maintains a schedule to constantly improve standards.  Woodard, along with other labs and furniture companies, strives to constantly improve standards for the furniture industry.
