RUTH SCHMITT USERuth Alice Schmitt, 87, of Huntingburg, died Saturday (August 31) at her home. She was born May 21, 1926, in Jasper, to Henry and Philomena (Gramelspacher) Lechner. She married Frank J. Schmitt on April 15, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper.

Ruth was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Ladies Sodality, St. Mary’s Quilting Club and the Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her husband, Frank J. Schmitt, Huntingburg; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Roger Schmitt, Washington, Daniel (Sherry) Schmitt, Velpen, Norbert (Phyllis) Schmitt, Huntingburg, Mark (Doris Harris) Schmitt, Huntingburg, and Lee Ray (Susie) Schmitt, Washington; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Beth (Tom) Vogler, Ireland, Diana (Dennis) Uebelhack, Mt. Vernon, and Kim Davis, Huntingburg; one sister, Eleanor Gogel, Jasper; one brother, Virgil Lechner, Jasper; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Sue Schmitt, one brother, Vincent Lechner, and four sisters, Cordella Hopf, Florence Hurst, Rosetta Keusch, and Marcella Heim.

Funeral services at 11 a.m. (EDT) Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 8-11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg is in charge of arrangements.  There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be made out to St. Mary’s Quilting Club or to a favorite charity. Condolences and expressions of sympathy may be shared online at
