Gilbert F. “Gib” Merkley, 89, St. Anthony

Gib MerkleyGilbert F. “Gib” Merkley, 89, of St. Anthony, died Monday (August 5) at Providence Home and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in St. Anthony on July 10, 1924, to Frank and Theresa (Horney) Merkley. He married Agnes “Aggie” Gish, his wife of 60 years, on June 24, 1953, in St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony.

Gilbert was a Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army. He served two tours in the Korean War. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in St. Anthony, St. Anthony American Legion Post #493, and V.F.W. Post #673 in Jasper. He enjoyed cats, and watching birds and squirrels.

Surviving are his wife, Agnes Merkley; two daughters, Ann Staff, and her husband Noll, St. Anthony, and Patty Ruhe, and her husband Brian, Jasper; four sons, Richard “Dick” Merkley, and his wife Jeanne, Gene Merkley, and his wife Sandy, Frank Merkley, and his wife Denise, and Joe Merkley, and his wife Jackie, all of St. Anthony; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Alban Merkley, and his wife Rose, Huntingburg.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie “Shag” Merkley, four brothers, Clarence, Irvin, Hilbert (Gilbert’s twin), and Ralph Merkley, four sisters, Stella Reckelhoff, Ida O’Conner, Theresa Klem, and Mercedes “Patty” Schnieders.

Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, with burial at a later date. St. Anthony American Legion Post #493 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
