Sylvester A. “Si” Hurst, 87, Ferdinand

Si editedSylvester A. “Si” Hurst, 87 of Ferdinand died Tuesday (July 9) at Prairie Lakes Health Campus in Noblesville. He was born April 13,1926, in Jasper to Gilbert and Alma (Burger) Hurst. He married Mary Margaret Wollenmann June 28,1949,  in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. She died April 3, 2010.

Sylvester was a member of St. Ferdinand Parish and its St. Joseph’s Sodality. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 and Ferdinand Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a founding member of the Ferdinand Development Corporation, and a member of St. Meinrad K of C  Post 5599.

Surviving are one son, Chris Hurst and his wife Kyla of Fishers; three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Karen) Burkley of Brooklyn, Indiana, Mrs. Scott (Tina) Willis of Fishers, and Vanessa Hurst of Louisville; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Hurst, Middletown, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Ann Reckelhoff,  Lexington, Kentucky, and Virginia Edelen, Louisville.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Hurst, and a daughter, Kathleen Hurst in infancy.

Funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church with military graveside rites by Ferdinand American Legion in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday and 7-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Becher Funeral Home, Ferdinand. Online condolences may be made at
