Oscar HurstOscar Hurst, 91, of Jasper, died Sunday (July 7 at the Timbers of Jasper.

He was born in Ireland June 8, 1922, to John and Ida (Pfeffer) Hurst. He was married to Myrtle Sallee. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2008.

Oscar worked as truck driver for many years. He was an Army Veteran and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, VFW Post #673, American Legion Post #147, and the Jasper Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards.

Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Streicher, South Carolina, Donna Caruso and her husband Wayne, Indianapolis, and Cathy Bosler and her husband Mike, Jasper; six sons, Cliff Shirley, Ocala, Florida, Curt Shirley and wife Karen, Orange County, California, Mike Hurst, Arthur, Illinois, and Dave Hurst and his wife Suzanne, Don Hurst and his wife Linda, and Kenny Hurst and his wife Sharon, all of Jasper; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter Jackie Crouse, and one son, Gregory J. Hurst, one sister, Mary Ann Hurst, and six brothers, Gene Hurst, and Ted, Sylvester, George, Florian, and Ambrose Sermersheim.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery. VFW Post #673 will conduct military gravesite rites.
Friends may call from 9-11 Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.
