Sister Cecilia Ann Miller, 91, St. Mary-of-the-Woods

Sr. Cecilia Ann MillerSister Cecilia Ann Miller, 91, a member of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 3:10 p.m. Friday (May 31) in Mother Theodore Hall at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

She was born in Jasper on January 22, 1922, to Linus and Clara (Gosman) Miller and was named Mary Ann.

Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marge Loehr Thomas.

Sr. Cecilia Ann entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on January 6, 1940, and professed perpetual vows August 15, 1948. She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and Rosary colleges. She served on the music faculty of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College from 1957 to 1968 and from 1972 to 1977. She was also a coordinator of school music for the congregation. She was a music teacher in elementary schools in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Oklahoma, including at Precious Blood School in Jasper from 1977 to 1988. While in Jasper she also offered private lessons to children with special needs. She then taught music for five years at Ursuline-Pitt Academy in Louisville for children with special needs. In 1995, she went to Taiwan for five years to begin a music program at St. Theresa Opportunity Center, a school begun by Sisters of Providence for children with disabilities. On her return, she volunteered at Woods Day Care/Pre-School and began offering music activities for the sisters in the congregation’s infirmary until 2011, after which she served in the ministry of prayer.

The funeral was Monday morning in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Father Daniel R. Hopcus officiated. Burial was in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
