Virgil W. Merkel, 75, Fort Wayne

Virgil MerkelVirgil W. Merkel, 75, Fort Wayne, died Saturday (May 25) at his home.

He was born in Birdseye to Oscar and Rosella Merkel.

Surviving are his wife, the former Carol Sue Trabel; three sons, Christopher Merkel and wife Ellen of Centerville, Ohio, Steven Merkel and wife Christine of Whiteland and Jay Merkel and wife Shannon of Spencerville; two daughters, Lisa Bonahoom and husband James of Fort Wayne and Laura Meitz and husband Paul of Lincoln, California; two brothers, Allen Merkel and wife Marlene of Jasper and David Merkel and wife Brenda of Celestine; sister Florence Vogler and husband Dennis of Cottonwood, Arizona; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laverne Merkel, and a granddaughter.

Mr. Merkel worked as an electronics engineer. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Fort Wayne and Knights of Columbus Council 451. He was a graduate of Saint Meinrad Seminary and an avid woodworker.

Funeral services are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery in Fort Wayne. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at D.O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne, and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
