Sr. Margaret Carolyn Kissel, OSB, 84, Ferdinand

SrSister Margaret Carolyn Kissel, 84, of the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, died at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday (May 8) in the monastery’s Hildegard Health Center.

A native of Evansville, Sister Margaret Carolyn was born August 20, 1928, the fourth of seven children born to George and Leona (Scheller) Kissel. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1946 and made her monastic profession of vows in 1948. She is survived by three sisters, Sister Mary George Kissel, also a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand; Cecilia Kissel, and Pat (husband Tom) Trainer, both of Evansville; one brother, Robert (wife Jeannette) of Evansville; three generations of nieces and nephews; cousins and friends; and members of her religious community. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, George (wife Reinilda) and Nicholas Kissel.

Sister Margaret Carolyn ministered in elementary education for over 50 years. She taught at Christ the King, St. Benedict, Holy Redeemer, St. Joseph, and Resurrection, all in Evansville; St. Pius X in Indianapolis, Fort Branch, Bradford, Tell City, and Montgomery. She was also a representative for patient relations at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville. For 30 years, she has been assistant director and teacher at The Reading Carrel in Evansville, a ministry she shared with her sister, Sister Mary George. Visitation will be at the monastery on Friday from 2-7 p.m. EDT and on Saturday, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. EDT. A wake service will be Friday at 7:15 p.m. EDT. The funeral Mass will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. EDT in the monastery church, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand.
