Steve MessmerSteven E. Messmer, 68, Brazil, died Sunday (March 31) in St. Vincent Clay Hospital, Brazil.

He was born in Huntingburg on October 31, 1944, to Clement and Viola (Woerter) Messmer.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Messmer; a daughter, Sally Messmer, Lafayette; two sons, William Messmer, and his wife, Jill, Greenwood, and Paul Messmer, and his wife, Hether, Brazil; a sister, Patty Seckinger, St. Meinrad; two brothers, Paul and Bernard Messmer, Jasper; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Suzann Schiewer.

Steven was graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1962 and from Indiana State University in 1966. He worked at IBM in Greencastle and retired from Weston Paper in Terre Haute in 1998. Following retirement, he worked for the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods until 2005 and was currently employed at Forest Park Golf Course, Brazil. He had volunteered coaching baseball with the Clay Youth League and basketball and baseball at the YMCA. He was a member of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Brazil and Knights of Columbus and volunteered his accounting skills for St. Ann’s Clinic in Terre Haute, the Carmelite Monastery at Carmel of Terre Haute and the Brazil park board.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Clearview Cemetery, Brazil. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at French Funeral Home in Brazil. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carmelite Monastery at Carmel of Terre Haute, 59 Allendale, Terre Haute IN 47802.
