Sr. LaVerne Scheller, OSB, 94, Ferdinand

Sr. LaverneSister LaVerne Scheller, 94, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, died at 8 a.m. Monday (March 18) at Memorial Hospital and Health in Jasper.

She was born in St. Wendel on November 8, 1918, to Ed and Rosa (Maurer) Scheller. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1945 and made her monastic profession of vows in 1947.

Surviving are nieces, nephews and members of her religious community. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Freeman Scheller.

Sister LaVerne was a teacher for more than 40 years. She taught in Morganfield, Kentucky, at Earle C. Clements Job Corps; at Resurrection, Christ the King, St. Theresa, St. Benedict, Holy Redeemer, Holy Rosary, and St. Joseph schools in Evansville; and in Indianapolis and Washington. She served as mail clerk and in other supportive services at the monastery, including the ministry of prayer.

The funeral will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the monastery church. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Visitation from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and after 1 p.m. Thursday at the monastery church. A wake service will begin at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand.
